NEW! BOOK NOW FOR TOURS BEGINNING MARCH 1
Take a deep dive into Louisiana culture on this experience from Gray Line Tours. This “combeaux” tour, as we say down here, combines our Life on Destrehan Plantation tour with a cruise through Manchac Swamp with Cajun Pride Swamp Tours.
Your adventure begins in New Orleans where you’ll board a comfortable Gray Line bus in the French Quarter. Your first stop will be Destrehan, the oldest document plantation in the Mississippi Valley. Here you’ll be guided through the Big House by a costumed docent, and you’ll also get a chance to tour fascinating exhibits in the outbuildings on your own. Along with way, you’ll hear tales of pirates, yellow fever epidemics, a slave revolt, and Union occupation during the Civil War. You’ll also learn how newly free enslaved people were taught skills here needed to transition into a life of freedom.
The second part of experience features a cruise through Manchac Swamp with a homegrown captain. You’ll discover how people today, much like the early Cajuns, sustain their way of life fishing, hunting and trapping in these waters. You’ll see alligators, majestic birds, plopping turtles, cypress trees and other plant life. You may even get to hold a baby alligator.
The tour takes approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes from start to finish. Learn more and book now.
